Wanting to snap out of their three-game losing streak, the Macau Black Bears’ Ryan Watkins took it upon himself to deliver a monster performance of 31 points and 18 rebounds to give his team a 107-81 victory over the Wolf Warriors, Sunday at the Foshan International Sports and Cultural Center.
Both the Black Bears and Wolf Warriors came into the ball game nursing three-game skids but it was the home team who had the firepower to topple the visiting squad.
Watkins’ 31-point outing was one point shy of his career-high of 32 points, a feat he achieved in his very first game in the ABL. On Sunday, the 6-foot-9 center shot an efficient 13-for-20 from the field and showed his range by hitting three triples. Aside from the dominant showing by Watkins, Anthony Tucker also had a noteworthy game, dishing out a career-high 19 assists to go along with 13 points. The reigning World Import MVP tied Indonesia’s Douglas Herring for most assist by a World Import and was two dimes shy of tying the all-time record set by Jason Brickman.
The Black Bears ran the Wolf Warriors off the gym right from the opening quarter as they raced to a 29-16 start. They kept their foot on the gas pedal and unloaded a 36-point barrage in the second. The lead grew to as high as 39 points as the Black Bears vented the frustrations of their three-game skid on the lowly Wolf Warriors.
New World Import Shawntez Patterson, who replaced Eddy Curry, had a quiet ABL debut of 20 points and nine rebounds. Mike Bell contributed 15 points as well as nine boards. The Wolf Warriors missed the stellar play of Mike Taylor who was nursing a knee injury.
The Black Bears shot 54 percent from the field, highlighted by 13 3-pointers and 48 points in the paint. They also capitalized on their free throws, going 16-for-18, as well as getting 18 points off of second-chance opportunities.
After getting back into the win column, the Black Bears lock horns against the Formosa Dreamers on January 24 in the hopes of improving their 7-5 record. For the 1-12 Wolf Warriors, they’ll try to get their second win of the season against the defending champions San Miguel Alab Pilipinas on January 23.
