The Saigon Heat proved that their opening game win against the CLS Knights Indonesia was no fluke as they came up with another big end-game performance to defeat the Macau Black Bears 96-93 at the CIS Arena.
Early in the fourth quarter, it looked like the Black Bears will continue to display their poise as they led 82-76 off a basket from Nathan Yu. However, the home team pulled off a huge rally to take back control of the game. Two free throws from Trevon Hughes capped a massive 12-0 run that turned the six-point deficit into a six-point lead with 3:11 remaining in the game.
Yu refused to let the Black Bears lose without a fight as he came up big in the end game by hitting key shots, including a three-point basket and a two to retake the lead for Macau 93-92.
The hero of their game against the Kings, Justin Young, drew a foul with 32 seconds in the game but only managed to sink his first free throw. Unfortunately for the Black Bears, Hughes grabbed the crucial offensive rebound, leading to a foul drawn by Kyle Barone. The lanky Saigon import also got a split from the stripe to get them the lead, 94-93. He completed his heroics with a steal on the other end to help the Heat their second straight win at home.
Fresh off his 29 point performance in his ABL debut, Hughes played even better with 36 points on 14 of 21 shooting from the field. Murphy Burnatowski added 20 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals while Barone also chipped in a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Ryan Watkins powered Macau’s attack with 32 points and eight rebounds but he committed his fifth and final foul with two minutes remaining in the game, which took out the best offensive and defensive player for the Black Bears. Anthony Tucker and Mikh McKinney added21 and 18 points, respectively, while combining for six triples in the contest.
Macau will try to bounce back as they take on Hong Kong Eastern at the Southorn Stadium on November 27 while Saigon will play their first away game of the season on November 28 as they visit the CLS Knights Indonesia for what should be another hotly contested rematch.
