The Singapore Slingers won on the road to claim their first victory of the ABL season, dealing Mono Vampire Basketball Club a 91-81 defeat in Stadium 29, Thailand.
Leaning on a balanced attack with four players finishing in double figures, the Slingers leaned on a combination of unselfish play and relentless attack inside the paint. The Slingers spread the ball beautifully, notching 28 assists in the game, highlighted by a near triple-double from World Import Xavier Alexander. The X-Man finished one assist shy of the feat, as he notched 33 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 3 steals.
Alexander led the way with a terrific performance, but he got a lot of help as well from teammate John Fields. The World Import finished with a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Jerran Young was also effective with his 17 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists.
Mono Vampire was paced by the duo of World Imports Marcus Keene and Mike Singletary in the loss. The duo accounted for 63 of the team’s 81 total points, with Keene dropping 35 on 8/14 from beyond the arc. Singletary tallied 28 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.
The Slingers came racing out of the gate, opening up their biggest lead of the game at 16 point in the 8:47 mark of the 2nd period off a jumper from Fields, 28-12. The lead would remain at double figures entering the half, as the Slingers dictated the tone and slowed down the pace of the game to attack the inside of Mono Vampire.
The home squad would get their bearings in the 3rd quarter behind hot shooting from Moses Morgan and Keene from beyond the arc. However the Slingers were able to keep the Thailand-based squad at bay, as Delvin Goh and Alexander attacked repeatedly in the paint.
Mono Vampire would try one last gasp rally in the fourth quarter, as Keene went on another three point shooting binge. His triple with 4:19 remaining in the game trimmed the deficit to only three points, 74-77. However the Slingers remained undeterred, as Alexander made four straight free throws, plus baskets from Goh and Fields kept the Slingers ahead until the eventually cruised to the victory.
