The BTN CLS Knights prevailed over the Westports Malaysia Dragons 73-70, stretching their winning streak to an incredible six straight games.
It was a thriller inside the GOR Basket Kertajaya in Surabaya, Indonesia, as the Knights leaned on the clutch performances of Wong Wei Long, Douglas Herring and Brandon Jawato to preserve the win for the home squad.
Though the trio provided the finishing kick that the team needed to grab the win, it was World Import Maxie Esho that did the most damage, sparking the Knights with 21 points and 8 rebounds in a low scoring affair all throughout.
Locals Wong and Jawato were instrumental in the match, as they provided ample local support to help take down the Dragons. Wong chipped in with 12 points on 3/4 from beyond the arc. Jawato tallied 11 points, and 5 rebounds.
Douglas Herring was also a standout, this time tallying double digit totals in assists and points. His 13 points was complemented by 13 assists, a game high.
On the other end, the Dragons were led by a sterling performance from World Import Winston Shepard. With 23 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, Shepard was the catalyst for a fourth quarter surge that almost delivered the win to the Dragons.
Malaysia also got a huge boost from Loh Shee Fai, who fired away for 17 points on 3/6 from beyond the arc, and 2 rebounds in the loss.
It was a tight ball game all throughout, with the Knights holding a five point lead heading into the final frame, 56-51. Baskets by Herring and Jawato sandwiched a Shepard shot to start the period, stretching the Knight’s lead to eight points.
After a triple by Wong gave the Knights a s even point advantage once again with 4:48 left in the game, the Dragons made their move with a big 9-0 run, the last one coming off of a layup from Chris Everlsey to pull ahead 68-66 at the 2:21 mark.
However inside the final two minutes, Wong made a booming tripe that swung the lead back to the Knights. Shepard drove coast to coast to counter the basket and push the Knights ahead, however back to back baskets by Herring and Jawato, the last one being a courageous drive to the rim gave the Knights a three point lead with seven seconds remaining.
The Dragons had one last chance to tie the game, but a desperation three from Chin Cheng missed the mark, giving the Knights another win on their home floor.
The victory boosts the Knights to above .500 once again with an 8-7 card. They’re currently at 7th place in the standings.
The Dragons on the other hand fall to 5-7, losers of its fourth straight game. They’re now in 8th place in the standings.
