The BTN CLS Knights continued their winning streak in the ABL, winning a thriller versus the Saigon Heat, 91-90 inside the GOR Basket Kertajaya in Surabaya, Indonesia.
It was a tight ball game that the Knights were able take, despite being down by double digits in the fourth quarter. After being tied at 66-all at the start of the fourth quarter, the Heat found the range in the period beginning with free throws from Heat World Import DeAngelo Hamilton at the 5:34. A layup by Dang Khoa Tran at the 2:57 mark gave Saigon an 11 point lead, and at that point it seemed like the game was inevitably going to Saigon.
However the hometown squad refused to surrender. The team began a furious rally with a layup from Brandon Jawato, which triggered the comeback. It was the beginning of a 12-0 run, highlighted by back to back booming triples from Wong Wei Long to restore the lead to the Knights, 89-88.
Trevon Hughes would restore order momentarily for the Heat, as he was fouled by Douglas Herring and canned two free throws to take a one point lead with eight seconds remaining. However Herring would atone for his mistake, as the World import would strike quickly, giving the Knights the lead once again. Corey Cilia missed a desperation triple, which signified the Knights completing the tremendous comeback.
Douglas Herring was the catalyst for the Knights with the game winner, along with 20 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. The Indonesia-based squad got several other supporting performances, led by Wong Wei Long and his clutch triples. He bounced back from a scoreless game against the Singapore Slingers to knock down four treys en route to 14 points.
The Knights also got good contributions from Daryl Watkins, who had 21 points and 5 rebounds. Local player Brandon Jawato filled the stat sheet, as he registered 19 points, 3 rebounds,4 assists and 2 steals in the winning cause.
The Heat had a monster ballgame from De Angelo Hamilton, who registered a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with 4 assists. Kyle Barone and Trevon Hughes had 21 and 20 points respectively. Dang Khoa Tran was also stellar in the losing cause with 17 points and 5 assists.
The Knights’ win was their 14th of the season, and are now at 14-11 with one game remaining on their schedule. Currently at 4th place, the Heat have a chance to rise to 3rd, depending on how the Singapore Slingers fare in their final four contests.
The Heat fall to .500 at 12-12. Despite being safely in the Playoffs, the team suffered their third straight loss to fall to sixth place.
