The off-season is about to come to an end as the new season kicks off January 14th 2012 and we’re checking in on some of the AirAsia ABL players. First up are Warren Ybanez and Rob Wainwright of the AirAsia Philippine Patriots and their thoughts on their career paths, favourite moves on court as well as their what they expect from the upcoming season.
Warren Ybanez, Point Guard, AirAsia Philippine Patriots
Warren has loved basketball ever since he was a kid and the passion just kept growing. As he’s loved basketball since he was a young boy, earning a living out of doing what he loves to do is one of the greatests things about being a professional. Warren’s aspiring message to young kids would be to play hard and smart and to continue doing it, as they could one day represent the Phillipines.
Warren’s favourite move on court is his cross-over, which he often uses to get around the the opposing team’s defense. As Warren himself is already an established point guard in the ABL, he considers Johny Abrientos a basketball icon for the Philippines because he is the best point guard of in the Philippines. Michael Jordan is Warren’s favourite player of all time because he is a good player with leadership and discipline. In the AirAsia ABL, Warren has been awarded the MVP when the Patriots won the championship in the first season of the AirAsia ABL last 2009.
Rob Wainwright, Forward, AirAsia Philippine Patriots
Rob also started playing basketball at a young age as he was one of the taller kids among his classmates in primary school. Still standing tall today at 6 feet and 5 inches, loving and learning the game from a young age has inspired him to be the professional he is today. If he was not playing the game, he would want to be a CSI agent. Rob admits to enjoying the fame that comes with playing basketball professionally and fully encourages any young enthusiasts to find their niche at the game and to work hard to become the best at it.
Rob’s favourite move on court would be his 3 point shots as he has been a sharp shooter since his youth days. Robert Jaworski is who Rob would consider as a basketball icon for the country, considering him a PBA legend. As a sharp 3 points shooter, Rob thinks that he shoots like Ray Allen who is his favourite NBA basketball player of all time. Rob’s biggest upcoming goal is to help the Patriots win the championship in Season 3.
