With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, the Westports Malaysia Dragons need every win they can get, but standing in their way this Friday at the MABA Stadium will be the ever-formidable Singapore Slingers.
Currently in ninth place with a 7-15 record, the Dragons are just outside of the playoff picture, trying to chase the 9-14 Mono Vampire Basketball Club. The Malaysian squad recently ended their six-game losing streak in a thrilling win over the Saigon Heat. Chris Eversley had 22 points and 11 rebounds while Winston Shepard returned from his one-game suspension and provided 23 points and 16 boards. The Dragons may have finally put a stopgap to their losses but they can’t afford to suffer more defeats especially with the Mono Vampire gaining steam, winning their last four games.
The Dragons will be up against playoff-bound Singapore Slingers who are sporting a 13-9 record. They’re coming off a tight overtime loss against the BTN CLS Knights Indonesia where Jerran Young erupted for a career-high 41 points. He was aggressive all game long, particularly in the second half when Singapore erased a 15-point deficit and forced overtime.
Another player to watch out for Singapore is Xavier Alexander. The X-Man scored 32 in the loss to the Knights which leaves him just 17 points away from reaching a total of 2,000 points in the ABL. A big night from him will give him another league milestone.
This Sunday will also conclude the season series between the two squads with the Slingers getting the upper hand in all three previous contests with an average winning margin of 34 points. In their first meeting, Singapore hammered home a 54-point win. The second encounter was much closer with the Dragons only losing by only 11 points, but they were blown out of the water by 37 points in the third meeting.
Can the Dragons finally get a win against Singapore and improve their playoff chances or will the Slingers continue their dominance?
