An all-important matchup featuring the ninth place Westports Malaysia Dragons and eighth place Mono Vampire Basketball Club takes place this Sunday at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
If the Mono Vampire win, they clinch the remaining playoff spot and the Dragons will kiss their playoff hopes goodbye. But if the Malaysian squad comes out victorious, they live to fight another day.
Mono Vampire currently own a 9-14 record and are on a hot streak, winning their last four games. Their previous win was against the Macau Black Bears. The two teams went at it in a high-scoring affair but Thailand came out with the win thanks to Mike Singletary’s performance of 36 points, tying his season-high, while adding seven rebounds and eight assists. Mono’s potent offensive weapon has scored at least 30 points four times this season.
The Dragons meanwhile are coming off a loss against the Singapore Slingers. Nnanna Egwu and Winston Shepard had 20 points apiece but Chris Eversley settled for just eight points on 3-of-9 shooting. They were also on the wrong side of history as Xavier Alexander was able to reach 2,000 career points after he finished with 25 points and got the win.
With three games left in each of their schedules, it’s now or never for both these squads. Their season series is split with one win each and after their third meeting, they go at it again in what could be another significant matchup next Wednesday.
But if Mono Vampire already nabs a win this Sunday, they’ll improve to 10 victories for the season – a number that the Dragons won’t be able to reach. Last year’s finalists will then complete the postseason cast.
Can Mono Vampire get the final playoff berth or will the Dragons stay alive?
