Playoff-bound squads Singapore Slingers and BTN CLS Knights Indonesia conclude their season series this Sunday at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.
The Knights, who are 12-11, won their first regular season meeting but the 13-8 Slingers were able to get the next two. The last time these two teams met, the Slingers nabbed a playoff berth, getting the narrow 71-68 victory in Indonesia. The Knights meanwhile, were able to secure a seat in the postseason last Sunday when the ninth place Westports Malaysia Dragons lost to the Macau Black Bears.
The Slingers recently came from a tough loss at the hands of San Miguel Alab Pilipinas. In a highly-defensive battle, it was the reigning champions who put their foot down, holding the Slingers to below 35 percent shooting from the field, including 1-for-13 from beyond the arc. John Fields got 21 points but against the daunting frontcourt of Alab, he only corralled seven rebounds, way below his averages. Xavier Alexander got his usual numbers of 18 points and 12 boards but he had an awful shooting night, going 6-for-20.
Fields, Alexander, and the rest of the Slingers aim to bounce back against the Knights who triumphed in their last contest versus the Westports Malaysia Dragons. The Indonesian squad exhibited late-game execution and stellar defense led by Douglas Herring and Maxie Esho. Herring is averaging 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 9.0 assists, and 2.8 steals while Esho is providing 23.6 points and 9.3 rebounds. The two have been a huge part of Indonesia’s success so far.
Should the regular season end now, these two teams will meet again in the playoffs as the Slingers currently hold the third seed while the Knights own the sixth. In a potential postseason encounter, this Sunday will be a very interesting matchup between these two teams.
