The Singapore Slingers aim for their third straight win on Friday as they host the Macau Black Bears at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.
The Slingers recently defended their home court with ease with a 101-47 demolition job over the Westports Malaysia Dragons. The 54-point winning margin is now the biggest in ABL league history, surpassing the 52-point win of the San Miguel Beermen versus the Saigon Heat on April 17, 2013.
The Slingers were led by John Fields, who had a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds. Through three games, Fields is Singapore’s leading rebounder with 11.3 per contest. The Slingers have always boasted a dominating center the past couple of seasons and Fields is right along that alley if he continues to post up big numbers. Xavier Alexander also had a big night, tallying 17 points, eight rebounds, and career-high with 17 assists.
Singapore shot 53 percent from the field but it was on the defensive end that made all the difference. The Slingers played solid defense throughout the contest and limited the Dragons to just 28 percent shooting, only 10 assists, and forced 16 turnovers.
Facing the Slingers will be Mikh McKinney and the rest of the Macau Black Bears. McKinney had himself a game with a brilliant 41-point performance to lead the Black Bears over Hong Kong Eastern. The Filipino-American was relentless, highlighted by his four triples and 15-for-15 shooting from the foul line.
McKinney will be matched up against Singapore’s Alexander. Both stars are two of the most versatile players in the league. Alexander, the do-it-all forward for the Slingers, has been slowly expanding his game. He’s shooting better from the 3-point line and he’s coming off a career game in assists.
The X-Man is the best wing defender for Singapore and he will have a tall task ahead of him as he tries to slow down McKinney, who is also a stat sheet stuffer. McKinney, however, has also proven that he can light up the scoreboard when needed as highlighted by his 41-point outburst versus Hong Kong. Alexander and McKinney be an interesting head-to-head encounter.
The Slingers and Black Bears square off at 8:00 PM at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.
