Two teams looking to bounce back from tough defeats lock horns this Sunday as the Formosa Dreamers go head-to-head with the Singapore Slingers in the 10th season of the ASEAN Basketball League.
The Slingers are currently sixth in the team standings with a 1-2 record while the Dreamers are in eighth place with a 2-5 card. Both teams are coming off losses against the Taipei Fubon Braves over the weekend.
The Braves first took down the Dreamers, 83-76, in their third meeting of the season. Formosa’s Jerran Young put up a valiant effort of 25 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, four steals in the loss. Unfortunately for the Dreamers, Young’s had little help from his fellow World Imports. Anthony Tucker and Jordan Tolbert had a combined 19 points on 7-for-21 shooting from the field.
The Dreamers were also bullied in the paint. They severely lost the rebounding battle, 41-57, versus the Braves’ frontline led by Charles Garcia, who was responsible for 21 boards.
The Slingers also failed to get a win against the Braves, surrendering an 83-77 decision. Xavier Alexander led Singapore with 20 points, nine rebounds, and six dimes while Marcus Elliott had 17 points – his best scoring output for the Slingers so far. However, he still struggled from the field, hitting just 7-of-25, including 3-of-9 from deep. Alexander and Elliott atoned for 13 of their team’s 16 turnovers.
The matchup between the Slingers and the Dreamers will also feature Young going up against his former team. The versatile guard averaged 19.0 points on 45 percent shooting, 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.3 steals for the Slingers last season, helping his team reach the ABL Finals.
The Dreamers have to wary of the Slingers’ post play and rebounding prowess as Singapore is the best rebounding team so far, pulling down 45 a game. They don’t want to be outworked in the glass again just like in their previous game.
For the Slingers, as much as they prefer a slow defensive battle, they have to be more consistent on the offensive end. They have been posting 78.7 points through three games. Their scoring average is at the bottom of the league, edging only the Saigon Heat who just made their season debut last Friday with 64 points. Elliott has yet to have a good shooting game, so the Slingers have to find easier and better scoring opportunities for the former MVP.
The Dreamers will host the Slingers at the Changhua County Stadium in Changhua City, Taiwan, 3 PM local time (GMT +8).
