For the fourth time this season, the Formosa Dreamers reigned supreme over Hong Kong Eastern. The two squads met for a final time in the elimination round with the Dreamers getting the upper hand once more with a 109-101 victory, Saturday at the Changhua County Stadium in Changhua City, Taiwan.
The deadly trio of Will Artino, Tevin Glass, and Malcolm White delivered once again for the Taiwan squad. Artino scored 29 points while shooting 65 percent from the field to spearhead the offense while adding 12 rebounds and six assists. Glass was right behind with his 26-point, 7-rebound performance and Miller drilled six triples en route to 20 points.
With the three World Imports leading the way, the Dreamers caught fire from beyond the arc and hit 17 3-pointers. The Taiwanese team is now 12-6 for the season and improved to 6-2 at home.
In a game of runs and counter runs, the home team was able to hit timely baskets down the stretch to pull away. Miller, who waxed hot from deep all game long, buried a 3-pointer with 4:18 remaining in the game to give the Dreamers a 12-point lead, 101-89. But Hong Kong’s Marcus Elliott immediately cut the deficit in half with a stepback triple and an and1-play. Elliott finished with 34 points on 11-for-17 shots as he moved up to fourth place in the ABL all-time scoring list. The former World Import MVP also provided five rebounds and five assists but also committed eight turnovers.
Elliott’s efforts were halted by a huge putback slam from Artino to push Formosa’s lead to 103-95 with two and a half minutes remaining. Eastern got as close as six points one more time after Sam Deguara hit two free throws with 1:44 left but Artino provided the dagger with a layup on the other end.
Cheng Wei was a spark off the bench for Formosa, tallying 10 points in 19 minutes of action. He also buried two 3-pointers and dished out three dimes.
For Hong Kong, Deguara had another huge double-double of 29 points, missing only three shots out of 14 attempts, and 14 rebounds. Michael Holyfield battled through foul trouble and mustered only six points in 21 minutes. Although the new Eastern reinforcement managed 12 rebounds, his presence in the paint was sorely missed.
The Dreamers’ hot shooting powered them to victory but they also forced 17 turnovers on Eastern that earned them 23 points off of those errors. They also shared the basketball, tallying 25 assists while also getting 20 points from the bench.
Formosa will host the Wolf Warriors next in the hopes of making it three wins in a row. Hong Kong drops to 12-11 and will face the Mono Vampire Basketball game next Saturday.
