The Formosa Dreamers further compounded the struggles of the Saigon Heat with an 89-80 victory at home inside the Changhua Stadium. With the win, the Dreamers are now the hottest team in the league as they picked up their third straight win for an 8-6 win-loss tally.
Saigon, on the other end, continues to be stuck in the cellar at 2-8 after suffering their fourth straight loss.
The Heat started the game well as they knew it would not be smart to engage the Dreamers in a shoot-out. Instead, they played methodically and allowed Formosa only 18 points in the first period with Saigon import Tyshawn Taylor making up for eight of their 20 markers.
The second period was also hotly contested but it was Saigon that had the last say in the first half. Justin Young and Sam Thompson made back-to-back triples followed by another basket from the latter to built a 46-39 lead for the away team heading into the break.
Things turned sour early in the third quarter for the Heat as tag-team partners Ryan Watkins and Anthony Tucker opened the period with a 12-2 run to turn the tide towards their favor as they led 51-48.
Formosa’s third World Import in Jerran Young did not allow himself to be left behind as he also scored seven points in the third quarter to keep the momentum on the side of the home team. Tucker capped their big performance with a triple for a 65-58 advantage heading into the final period.
Formosa stretched their lead to double-digits 69-59 after a Tien Lei basket early in the fourth but the Heat showed signs of desperation and brought them back into the game. Thompson scored on a jump shot to get his team within two, 75-73, with still 3:13 remaining in the game.
This time it was their local scoring punch that put the game away for the Dreamers with Chang Tsung-Hsien, Yang Chin-Min, and Tien who sank the key baskets to thwart Saigon’s comeback bid.
Tucker had a big game with 30 points anchored on 6 of 14 shooting from downtown. Young added another massive stat-line with 19 points, 19 rebounds, six assists, five steals, and two blocks.
Chang, Yang, and Tien combined for 31 points, which was huge for the Dreamers as all of the Heat’s locals combined for only 15 points.
Saigon was led by Thomson once again with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. Taylor added 22 points but only made 6 of his 20 attempts from the field. He has only made 28% of his shots in their last two games.
