To prepare their National Teams for the South East Asian Games coming up in August, the Malaysia Basketball Association will be holding an International Basketball Invitational starting from June 13 to 17.
In the Mens tournament, Malaysia will be going up against National Taiwan Normal University (Taiwan), Chung Chou University of Science and Technology (Taiwan), and ACBA Dragons (Australia) in the five-day tourney.
The 3 Westports Malaysia Dragons Players that made the SEABA Championship roster will continuing their national team duties. Ting Chun Hong proved himself to be a valuable offensive option for Malaysia and should continue to have a large role in this tournament as well. Teo Kok Hou and Choo Wei Hong were solid contributors and should continue to get good chances to continue their runs.
The focus will be shifting to the bigger stars of Malaysia who were unavailable for the SEABA Championship earlier in May. Wong Yi Hou (15.4 Minutes / 5.9 Points), Kuek Tian Yuan (18.2 Minutes / 7.1 Points) were both key players in the Westports Malaysia Dragons rotation last season under Coach Chris Thomas and they return to the national team squad in this tournament. Both are more than capable long range bombers (at least 38.0% three-point shooting) and their length will surely be put to good use.
Two former Dragons will also be on the roster in this international tournament in Chee Li Wei and Kwaan Yoong Jing. The 27-year-old Yoong Jing has been a regular on both the National Team and Dragons roster and his 63 games played for the Dragons stands at 5th most for the franchise. Though he didn’t play for the Dragons last season, his size and versatility can still prove to be valuable for National Team play. Seasoned veteran Li Wei has not been on a Dragons roster since 2012 but he’s been regularly playing in local competition.
The rest of the Malaysia national team are Ong Wei Yong, Soo Eng Heng, Chan Kek Thai, Wong Chin Yong, and Mak Lok Seng.
Malaysia will be playing against National Taiwan Normal University (Taiwan) on Wednesday June 14th at 6:00 PM (local time).
They will then face Chung Chou University of Science and Technology (Taiwan) on Thursday June 15th at 8:00 PM (local time).
They will wrap up elimination play against the ACBA Dragons (Australia) on Friday June 16th at 8:30 PM (local time).
The teams will play in placement games on the final day of the competition on Saturday June 17th.
The MABA International Basketball Invitation will be played at MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur which was home to the Westports Malaysia Dragons for six straight ABL seasons before going under renovation this past season.
