Delvin Goh can still remember the silent locker room the night the Slingers fell in Game 5 of the 2019 ABL Finals. A gut-wrenching feeling filled the air. It was no longer just sadness, it was something more.
“I was more pissed than sad over the loss,” Goh recalled. “I thought we had a really good squad and [a] good chance of winning it all…we came in really close.”
The Singapore Slingers had a 7-point advantage over the CLS Knights Indonesia with 5:16 left in the game. The club’s first title was within reach, all they had to do was hold on. However, disaster struck a few minutes later.
At the 1:15 mark, coming from a missed three from Brandon Jawato, the ball made its way to the hands of Maxie Esho, who made the most of the second chance by making his own three to tie the game. In the very next play, former Slinger Wong Wei Long hit his patented shot from beyond the arc. The Slingers were suddenly down by 3. Despite their efforts, they would not be able to make up the difference.
As the buzzer sounded, Delvin Goh and the Slingers found themselves in an all so familiar situation. They once again failed to capture the championship despite making the finals three times in the last four years.
Heading to the upcoming season, Delvin knows he will already be one of the team’s veterans despite being just 24-years-old. “I started when was 16…although I didn’t get to play much, but by joining at a really young age [gave] me the exposure I needed to become who I am today.” the 6’7″ forward said
“I am always the quiet one but this time around I’m trying to speak up more.” Goh added.
Despite a disappointing end to last season, the Singaporean star cannot wait for the next season to start.
Over the offseason, the Singapore Slingers announced one of the league’s biggest signings — 2017 Import MVP Marcus Elliott would be joining the team for their 2019-2020 campaign.
“We played Marcus [Elliott] a lot of times and he’s definitely an offensive threat,” Goh stated. “We are looking forward to [seeing] how X and Marcus [will] play together.”
“We are just really excited for the season to start.”
