The Taipei Fubon Braves notched their third straight victory in the 10th season of the ASEAN Basketball League after toppling the Formosa Dreamers, 90-81, Saturday at the Changhua County Stadium in Taiwan.
The towering frontcourt of Charles Garcia and Gursimran-Sing Bhullar did the heavy lifting for their squad in the first meeting between the two Taiwanese ball clubs. Bhullar had a monster double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds while Garcia had 17 points and seven boards.
OJ Mayo chipped in with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while Tsai Wen-Cheng provided 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
It was in the middle quarters when the Braves were able to create separation against the Dreamers. The visiting team outscored their opponent 45-26 in the second and third periods. The Braves led by as many as 26 points, 81-55, in the final frame courtesy of a booming triple from Mayo.
The Dreamers tried to rally late, unleashing an 11-0 run in the final three minutes to get to within 10 points. However, Garcia was able to squash the Dreamers’ comeback bid with a driving layup to push the Braves’ lead back to 12 with 42 seconds remaining.
Marcus Keene led the home team with 22 points, eight assists, and two steals. Fellow World Import Jerran Young had a superb outing with his all-around performance of 17 points, 15 rebounds, and four assists. The versatile swingman was also instrumental on the defensive end with five steals and three blocks. Liam McMorrow chipped in with 14 points and 12 boards in a losing effort.
The Braves shot an efficient 56 percent from the field while holding the Dreamers to just 38 percent. The newest ABL team also won the rebounding battle, 44-37, and feasted on the paint with 46 points.
The Braves rose to a 4-1 record and will look to extend their winning streak when they take on the Macau Black Bears on Sunday. The Dreamers, on the other hand, are still winless after three games. They will try to get their first victory when they take on the Braves once again on December 21.
