The Macau Black Bears showed no mercy against the Wolf Warriors as they came away with a dominant wire-to-wire victory, 135-96, Wednesday at the University of Macau Sports Complex.
Fresh from his 29-23 performance in his ABL debut, Macau’s Ryan Watkins put up 41 points and 18 rebounds for an encore. Even more impressive, Watkins missed only one shot, going 18-for-19 from the field. He also did damage on the defensive end to come up with four steals.
The Black Bears jumped the gun on the home team from the very start, taking a 37-12 lead after the opening salvo. From then on, the visiting team continued to pour it on. They unleashed a 39-point third period that left the Wolf Warriors reeling. The lead ballooned to as high as 50 points courtesy of a 3-pointer from Derek King that made the score 118-68.
Reigning World Import MVP Anthony Tucker was right behind Watkins as he registered 29 points, five triples, five rebounds, and eight assists. Mikh McKinney was similarly in MVP form with his 20-point, 14-assist performance. Macau also got a huge lift from the locals as Nathan Yu contributed 15 points and Zihao Liu netted 11 points, three boards, and four assists.
The Black Bears shot a whopping 61 percent from the field, including 19-for-46 from beyond the arc. And with Tucker and McKinney dishing left and right, they ended up with 32 assists. The Wolf Warriors meanwhile tried to keep in step with their opponent using their 52 percent shooting clip but could not find their mark from downtown, going 1-for-14.
Deshawn Mitchell bounced back from his subpar opening game performance to come up big for the Wolf Warriors with 26 points. Chen Cai meanwhile shot an efficient 8-for-10 shooting clip en route to a 21-point game. Eddy Curry battled through foul trouble to end up with just 19 points and five rebounds.
The Wolf Warriors have had a rough start to their debut season. They suffered a 32-point loss in their season opener to Hong Kong Eastern and then lost by 39 points on Wednesday. They look to regroup and get their first win when they host the Formosa Dreamers on Saturday, November 24.
The Black Bears, on the other hand, aim for their third straight victory when they visit the Saigon Heat on November 25.
