Singapore Slingers Re-sign Four Local Players Singapore Slingers will try to redeem themselves in the 2013 season after failing to reach the ASEAN Basketball League playoffs last season. The Slingers management made an announcement over the weekend on re-signing their four local players – Desmond Oh, Ng Han Bin, Lim Sheng Yu and Delvin Goh.

Desmond, one of the best local players in the ABL, will bring back his tough defensive mindset and leadership skills in his fourth season with the Slingers. Even though he is most-known for his tough defense, Desmond has also proven that he can also be a big threat on offense. The 26 year-old shooting guard had his best offensive-game against the Chang Thailand Slammers on January 18th 2012 when he dropped 16 points. If Desmond can be more consistent with his shots, he will have a big chance of averaging more than 10 points per game and make a strong case for the Best Local Player Award next season.

Sheng Yu could be the X-factor for the Slingers next season. The 22 year-old small forward has all the tools to be the next young star in the ABL. He will be playing a big role off the bench for the Slingers as he will be expected to bring a lot of energy on defense and offense. “In the upcoming season, I want to be more aggressive and confident on both ends,” says Sheng Yu. He has a chance to be one of the better perimeter defenders this upcoming season. Sheng Yu saw an increase in playing time last season, averaging just a little under 10 minutes per game.

Swingman Han Bin will also be a big boost for the Slingers. He has been working very hard during the off-season and Slingers’ head coach Neo Beng Siang will surely welcome another offensive threat from the bench.

Probably the most interesting is the re-signing of 17 year-old Delvin Goh. He only appeared in 4 games last season but expect coach Neo to give him more minutes this upcoming season due to the retirement of two veteran big men Pathman Matialakan and Steven Khoo. Heading into the season, Delvin starred for the Singapore National Team in the U-18 SEABA Tournament held in Singapore last June. Goh was averaging 15 points and 8.6 rebounds per game during the U-18 SEABA Tournament.

Slingers’ General Manager Michael Johnson expects these four players to step up their game next season. “Our early exit last season motivated our players to keep improving and continue honing their skills. We only expect our experienced players – Desmond Oh, Sheng Yu and Han Bin to step up their game this upcoming season. We are also expecting our 200 cm, 17 year-old  forward Delvin Goh to play more quality minutes in the 2013 season.”
