Game Preview: Westports Malaysia Dragons vs Kaohsiung Truth

The Westports Malaysia Dragons and Kaohsiung Truth will play for their basketball lives as ASEAN Basketball League resumes on Saturday.

Gametime is set for 2:00 PM inside the Gem-In Mall, Cyberjaya Malaysia.

The stakes are simple: whichever team loses will be eliminated from Playoff contention, leaving the fourth seed to be decided between the Saigon Heat and the winner of this matchup. At sixth place, with a 5-13 record, the Dragons need to sweep their remaining assignments against the Truth, and hope that Saigon goes winless.

The Truth (5-12, fifth place) also desperately need a win to keep in step with the surging Heat. A win would give keep them in the Playoff hunt, though they too will need the Saigon Heat to lose the remainder of their games. They have a lower quotient than the Heat, therefore a tied record at the end of the elims would still boot them out of the Playoffs.

Riding a two game winning streak, the Dragons have made the race for the fourth seed even more intense. The team’s biggest victory of the season was their emotional 94-81 win over the Saigon Heat. World Import Josh Munzon returned to the home of his previous team and got things done, helping the Dragons keep their season alive.

Though it was a revenge game for Josh Munzon, Spencer and Gardner definitely got it done as well. Though diminutive, Gardner battled amongst the giants, finishing with 25 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Spencer backed him up with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. The two have been getting it done, and have been essential to this last ditch effort for the defending champions to make the playoffs.

While the Dragons are surging ahead, the Truth are in free fall. Four straight losses coupled with Saigon’s play has sent them out of the playoff situation, and in a precarious situation at 5th place.

In their 76-52 loss to the Singapore Slingers, only World Import Derek Hall scored in double digits, finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists. The result of the Slingers was a stinging loss that put their playoff fate in the hands of the Saigon Heat.

They have reason to be optimistic for this matchup with the Dragons, as they’ve defeated the defending champions in their two previous matchups.

However, the Dragons have a lot of momentum heading into this matchup, while the Truth have really struggled in their previous four games. Will this be the first win of the Dragons and a flicker of hope for the postseason, or will the Truth eliminate the defending champions this early?
