Nic belasco

It is now the off-season for all the ASEAN Basketball League teams. Some of the players are spending their time on well deserved vacations while others are staying active by participating in other leagues. For Nic Belasco, who played with Westports Malaysia Dragons in season 3, off season is about spending quality time back home in Manila, Philippines, with his family

Belasco took a few minutes to talk to us about his first experience in the ABL and his favorite thing to do during the off-season.

How was your experience playing in the ABL?

I really enjoyed my first ABL experience. I was based in the Philippine Basketball League  (PBA) for 14 years and never got to travel much. Being able to see all of South East Asia in the span of 6 months was amazing. The Dragons really took care of me in KL and I’m appreciative of that.

What was your favorite moment from ABL Season 3?

My favorite moment was playing against San Miguel Beermen in the semi-finals. That was my old PBA team, so it was good to compete against them trying to reach the finals.  We were one game away from giving ourselves a chance to win it all. We lost that game 3, but I have no regrets.

Who was the toughest player to guard?

I had the privilege of guarding most of the imports in the ABL. The toughest for me had to be Steven Thomas from the Indonesia Warriors. I’m 6’6’’ and 225 pounds, so guarding someone as big as Steve was definitely a challenge. I would do my best to just try to not let him get the ball but it didn’t work too well for me.

What is your favorite thing to do during the off-season?

During the off-season, I just enjoy being with my family. My wife and 4 kids keep me entertained. At my age, I really can’t afford to take too much time off from working out. I try to get my family involved too, so I have been training them all in the gym while I get my workout in.

Do you want to come back and play in the ABL again next season?

The ABL was a great experience. I would definitely love to comeback to play another season if the opportunity arises. I can see the potential for this league to grow for many years to come.
