Saigon Heat77 : 69 Bangkok Cobras

Final Score

Saigon Heat’s home crowd was out in full force to support their team as they defeated the Bangkok Cobras earlier tonight. Both teams may be out of the playoffs but it didn’t stop the players from still putting on a great game which saw the Heat take the win at 77 to 63.

Jonathan Jones proved once again why he is a fan favourite when he finished as the game’s top scorer with 29 points and 14 rebounds for the Heat. Teammate Robert Sanz finished with 17 points behind him. Sanz was also 57% from the 3 point line, putting in a couple of important threes which helped the Heat maintain the lead throughout the entire game. Jahmar Thorpe rounded out the Heat’s top three scorers with 14 points.

Gentry Lewis led the Cobras in scoring with 23 points and 15 rebounds despite being 3 for 13 from the free throw line. Chanachon Klahan also had a good game and completed 70% of all his field goal attempts to record 17 points in this game.

The Cobras other import Travis George did not make an appearance in this game however and the AirAsia ABL is currently seeking for an official response from the Bangkok Cobras as there was no prior notification from the team regarding his absence.

The game started with a potential three point play from Jahmar Thorpe who was fouled on the way to the basket but he missed his free throw. He made up for it less than a minute later however when he dunked the ball much to the delight of the crowd. The Heat kept the pace up and never let go of the lead as they finished the quarter with 9 points between them and the Cobras at 25 to 14.

The Cobras kept pressuring the Heat as they tried to chase for the lead and back to back baskets from Reyes and Lewis saw them come as close as 7 points with 2:16 on the clock. Minh Trieu answered with a 3 pointer which saw the Heat back up to a double digit lead however and they eventually went into the halftime break 42 to 30.

The Heat came back from the halftime break on a 7 point run capped by yet another dunk from Jones which gave the home team a 17 point lead but Marvin Cruz followed that up with a three point play for the Cobras. The Cobras trimmed the Heat’s deficit to 7 points four separate times in the third quarter alone but was never able to get any closer and they saw themselves trailing 51 to 60 going into the final period.

Ratdech Kruatiwa had the opportunity to open up the fourth with 3 points but missed his shot but was able to make up for it by stealing the ball and giving an assist to Klahan’s basket which opened up scoring for the final quarter. Klahan then put in another basket less than a minute later to once again get to 7 points of the Heat but this was the closest the Cobras ever got to the Heat for the remainder of the game and the final buzzer saw the Heat with a 77 to 69 over the Cobras.

The Bangkok Cobras will have another game this week when they host the Indonesia Warriors at the Chulalongkorn University on Sunday the 6th of May. Saigon Heat’s next game will be at Tan Binh once again next week on Wednesday the 9th of May when they host the team currently at the top of the standings, the San Miguel Beermen.

Heat: Jonathan Jones – 29pts, Robert Sanz – 17pts, Jahmar Thorpe – 14pts, John Smith – 9pts, Minh Trieu – 4pts, Duong Nguyen – 2pts, Noy Javier – 2pts.

Cobras: Gentry Lewis – 23pts, Chanachon Klahan – 17pts, Jai Reyes – 16pts, Marvin Cruz – 7pts, Ratdech Kruatiwa – 4pts, Kaedum Chaiwat – 2pts.
