The AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League announced another individual award winner today: Anthony Johnson of AirAsia Philippine Patriots, who received the ABL’s Regular Season Import MVP 2012. Johnsonearned the trophy after having received the most votes from all the head coaches in the league, surpassing fellow nominees Westports Malaysia Dragons’ Tiras Wade and Saigon Heat’s Jonathan Jones.

“It’s an honor and I’m very grateful to win this award. There were a lot of good players in the ABL this year so it could have easily been someone else. So to me this is a blessing,” said Johnson who finished the season as the league’s second highest scorer this season, averaging 23.7 points per game. Johnson’s best game this season came when he scored 34 points against the Westports Malaysia Dragons at MABA Stadium on March 17th.

“This award will give me the motivation to keep working hard every time I step out on the court,” Johnson added. “I would also like to thank my teammates and coaches because without them, this would have not happened. I would like to thank God also.”

Johnson led the Patriots to the league’s second best record this season with 16 wins and 5 losses. This ensured that the Patriots secured the second seed to meet Indonesia Warrirs in the first round of the playoffs. Unfortunately, Johnson suffered a foot injury in Game 1 of the series, which led to the Patriots’ early exit in the post season.
