Andre Wong Hwee Liak, a familiar face in the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League has been chosen to officiate all three games in this year’s installment of the YouYi Games 2012 which will be held in Perth, Australia next week.
The YouYi, or “Friendship”, Games is an annual best of three series that pits the National Men’s Teams of China and Australia. Although it is considered a friendly match, the game always promises a high level of action, especially this year with the teams currently ranked close together in the world standings, Australia sitting at ninth and China just behind them on tenth and both teams preparing for the 2012 London Olympics.
Due to the high standard of competition in this series, the officiating has to be top notch and this year the honor once again goes to Singaporean referee Andre Wong Hwee Liak, one of the AirAsia ABL’s own referees. Hwee Liak will be paired with two veteran Australian referees for the entire series.
“We are very pleased to welcome Wong Hwee Liak back for the YouYi Games 2012. Everyone was very impressed with his skill and professionalism shown toward both teams last year. Hwee Liak is a great ambassador for Singapore and to his profession. We look forward to working with him again for this year’s series.” said Mr. Andrew Vlahov, an Australian national basketball player who has represented Australia four times in the Olympic Games during his playing career and is now CEO of RV Sport, the promoters for the YouYi Games.
Hwee Liak has a number of big games under his belt as on top of the YouYi Games he was also invited to officiate in the 2011 Cable Beach Tournament in Broome, Australia last year. He has also been in charge of a number of AirAsia ABL Games, most recently the first game in the playoff series between the AirAsia Philippine Patriots and the Indonesia Warriors on the 27th of May 2012.
