The Singapore Slingers went down the wire against Mighty Sports (Philippines) but missed out by a hair and lost to the team from the Philippines 72-70.

Dewarick Spencer had a huge second half en route to 31 points and 11 rebounds for Mighty Sports. Justin Howard made a valiant effort and got himself a huge 24-point, 20-rebound game but was still short of shouldering his team to the 2016 Merlion Cup Finals.

Shanghai Sharks Too Much to Overcome for Singapore Slingers

Despite holding on close to the Shanghai Sharks for most of the game, the Singapore Slingers couldn’t overcome the height and offensive power of the Chinese squad losing 89-67.

Guershon Yabusele led the way for the Sharks with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Xavier Alexander and Justin Howard tried to shoulder the load for the Slingers with a combined 39 points and 24 rebounds but fell short.

Dragons’ Kuek Scores 36 in Loss to Mighty Sports in Merlion Cup

The Westports Malaysia Dragons would be dealt their second loss in the Merlion Cup at the hands of the mighty Mighty Sports team from the Philippines, 105-78.

Dragons’ Kuek Tien Yuan was one point shy of tying the tournament high of 37 points, set by teammate Joel Wright, and finished with 36 points and 9 rebounds.

Samsung Seoul Thunders Explodes in Victory Over Dragons

In their first return to the OCBC Arena since winning the ASEAN Basketball League, the Westports Malaysia Dragons took a defeat at the hands of the Seoul Samsung Thunders, 99-70. The winning side was led by Michael Craig with 25 points and 9 rebounds.

The defending ABL Champions had some familiar faces on their roster for the tournament – Kuek Tien Yuan (8 points, 5 rebounds) and Wong Yi Hou (4 points, 4 rebounds), but this was a relatively new group of Dragons that the crowd got to see.

In the opening game of the revived Merlion Cup at the OCBC Arena, the home team Singapore Slingers held on to a 79-71 win over the Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor in front of their loving fans behind an all-around offensive performance. Singapore is set to be the hub for international asian basketball as the 2016 Merlion Cup hosts six teams from across Asia competing for the title of Champions when the tournament unfolds at the OCBC Arena in Singapore. The revival of the tournament is set to happen from Wednesday, September 21 to Sunday, September 25, 2016.

Interestingly enough, two of the six teams participating in the tournament will also be competing in next season’s ASEAN Basketball League, namely the host Singapore Slingers and the 2015-2016 champions, Westports Malaysia Dragons.

The stage has been set and the cast is now complete.

The newest season of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) is set to begin as the Westports Malaysia Dragons, Singapore Slingers, and the Saigon Heat from Vietnam, have all confirmed their participation in the upcoming 2016-2017 season.

The aforementioned three teams are actually no strangers to ABL fans. The Saigon Heat joined the league back in 2012 and is now entering its fifth season. Former Westports Malaysia Dragon star Matthew Wright has recently been included in the national training pool for the Philippines.

Wright certainly made a name for himself after his impressive stint with the Dragons in the 2015-2016 ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) season. The Dragons had a league-best 16 wins and four losses in the eliminations and came away with its first ever championship in franchise history after defeating the Singapore Slingers in a thrilling five-game series.

New Philippine Team Set to Join ABL

The ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) continues to grow.

In the past few weeks, the league opened its arms and welcomed two new teams: Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Truth and Hong Kong Eastern.

And now, a new Philippine team is set to make its mark in the first and only professional regional basketball league in South East Asia.
