All season long, the spotlight has shined brightly on the Big Three of Hong Kong Eastern. But when the team needed a lift in the big way against the dangerous Chong Son Kung Fu, it came from the most unlikely of heroes.
Ryan Moss was a tower of power for the defending champions Hong Kong Eastern Basketball Team, winning their highly anticipated match against Chong Son Kung Fu 88-76 at the Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai, China.
Moss was a force, registering a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds. He also swatted away 5 shots, most of them coming from penetration from the talented guards of Chong Son Kung Fu.
With Moss patrolling the paint, Heritage Import Christian Standhardinger was able to lead the team in scoring with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists. Kung Fu had no answer for the Filipino-German, as he took advantage of his size advantage against Caelan Tiongson. Hong Kong Eastern scored 46 points in the paint, compared to 32 for Chong Son, making it a point to utilize their size in the shaded area.
With Chong Son leading 24-19 at the 7:00 mark of the second quarter, Hong Kong finally found their offensive groove, unleashing a 16-2 run that put the home team up by 9 points, 35-26. However World Import Anthony Tucker knocked down two straight triples, the second one at the halftime buzzer, as Hong Kong would finish with a two point lead 39-37.
The third period saw Hong Kong initiating their offense through Standhardinger, with Elliott delivering on offense after a silent first half. The two tallied 15 points in the third quarter, while also being assisted by timely baskets from Tyler Lamb and Lee Ki. Triples from Luo Yongxuan and Mikh McKinney kept Chong Son within striking distance still, as the China-based squad entered the final period down 63-58.
However Chong Son’s offense dried up in the final period, while Hong Kong fired away from long distance. Elliott and Lee each had two triples in the contest, while jumpers from Lamb kept Chong Son at bay. A follow up shot from Moss with 57 seconds remaining gave Hong Kong an 83-75 lead, that would prove to be enough to withstand Chong Son in the end.
Elliott flirted with another triple once again, finishing with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Lamb had 16 points and 6 assists, followed by Lee Ki’s 11 points on 3/7 from long distance.
Tucker paced Chong Son with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Justin Howard had 17 points, 22 rebounds in the losing cause for the visiting squad.
Hong Kong emerges on top of the ABL standings with the victory at at 11-2 . Chong Son falls to solo second place with a 9-3 record.
