KUALA LUMPUR — The Westports Malaysia Dragons have formally announced Adam James Pearlman as their Head Coach for the upcoming 2018-2019 ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) season.
The Dragons finished last season at 8th place with a 5-15 record, missing the playoffs for a second straight season after winning the title in 2015-2016. Coach “Jamie” Pearlman has agreed on a long-term contract to coach the Dragons in the ABL and turn their fortunes around.
Pearlman expressed his excitement to join the Dragons’ family saying that he’s passionate and enjoys the challenge of bringing a group of individuals together from a variety of backgrounds and implementing a plan to build a strong team culture.
The Australian native is a Level 3 Performance Coach accredited by the Basketball Australia NCAS in 2018. He coached the Nelson Giants of the New Zealand National Basketball League in 2018 and managed to turn the Giants’ around from a 4-12 record in 2017 to a 14-4 record in 2018.
Coach Pearlman has a lengthy basketball background both as a professional player and coach. Pearlman is a nine-season veteran in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL), playing in his first 7 seasons with the Canberra Cannons before playing his last two seasons with the Cairns Taipans.
His coaching career started off as an assistant with the Cairns Marlins in the Queensland Basketball League (QBL). Pearlman eventually took over the Head Coaching position winning the Coach of the Year in 2013 and winning the title in 2016. Throughout his stint with the Marlins, Pearlman was also a part of the coaching staff with the Cairns Taipans in the NBL as well.
Most recently, Pearlman won another Coach of the Year mantle in the New Zealand NBL in his first season coaching in the league with the Nelson Giants.
“He’s had an extensive basketball development background and that will bode well for our team’s development efforts.” Dragons General Manager Andrei Reiza says of the new hiring.
“As a former professional player, I think he will be able to relate to the players as he understand the trials and tribulations a professional faces, day to day.”
Reiza also adds that he is looking forward to watch the Dragon’s benefit from playing under a coach with a defensive mindset like Coach Pearlman.
“I am a defensively minded coach, for it’s the defense end of the floor that ultimately wins championships.” Pearlman says.
He also adds that he is a fan of the Boston Celtics and the Utah Jazz, two NBA teams that are built around a team concept approach. Coach Jamie Pearlman says he enjoys watching any team that exemplifies and celebrates the concept of team, and also adds that he believes the foundation of any team begins with building a strong team culture.
Coach Pearlman will be joining the team in Kuala Lumpur in September.
