ASEAN Basketball League Power Rankings – Week 15

Last week in the ASEAN Basketball League, the top two teams clinched home court advantage in the playoffs. The Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions continue their rampant winning streak and got a hold of the number one spot while the Singapore Slingers earned the second seed.

Defending champions Westports Malaysia Dragons kept their playoff hopes alive by winning on the road against the Saigon Heat.

We’re down to our last two weeks in the regular season. As each team is gearing up for the playoffs, here’s a quick rundown of what happened last week:

1. Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions (Current record 15-2, Previous rank: 1)

The Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions extend their winning streak to 10 games by notching two victories over Alab Pilipinas last week. They’ve also earned the top seed, guaranteeing them home court advantage for the entire playoffs.

Here’s Heritage Import Lamb on their string of victories:

“We’ve been focused the last nine, ten games. Very focused. A lot of teams take a break this time of year. For us to start playing better and together, it’s very big. It’s definitely gonna help us in the playoffs.

Their pristine 10-0 streak is tied for the second longest winning in ABL history.

2. Singapore Slingers (Current record: 12-6, Previous rank: 2)

With the Long Lions claiming the number one seed, the Singapore Slingers are right behind them at number two. They got back to their winning ways by defeating the Kaohsiung Truth, 76-52, at home last Sunday.

Xavier Alexander got his second career triple-double as he normed 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists.

3. Westports Malaysia Dragons (Current record: 5-13, Previous rank: 5)

The defending champions are still alive in the playoff hunt thanks to their huge win over the Saigon Heat on Saturday.

Kiwi Gardner led the way with 25 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. They also got a huge boost from their locals as Tian Yuan Kuek and Wong Yi Hou combined for 23 points.

The Dragons are in desperation mode and each game counts. They have to win their last two matches against the Kaohsiung Truth.

4. Saigon Heat (Current record: 6-10, Previous rank: 3)

Three teams have already secured a playoff spot – the Long Lions, the Slingers, and Alab Pilipinas. Knocking on that postseason door are the Saigon Heat who is currently at fourth place in the standings. Their loss to Malaysia is a significant blow to their playoff chances.

The Heat are in for a tough schedule as the elimination round ends. They have to face the top two teams of the league, the Slingers and the Long Lions, twice before they enter the playoffs.

5. Alab Pilipinas (Current record: 9-9, Previous rank: 4)

The league-leading Long Lions got two wins last week at the expense of Alab Pilipinas. Though they lost back-to-back games, the Philippine team is already assured of a playoff spot. The important thing for them right now is to get enough momentum heading into the playoffs. All throughout the season, Alab has shown that they are capable of beating a tough team like the Slingers, but at the same time, they can also lose to a lower seeded team like the Dragons. Consistency will be key for Alab Pilipinas.

6. Kaohsiung Truth (Current record: 5-12, Previous rank: 6)

The Kaohsiung Truth have to get their act together. They’re currently in a four-game skid and have to get back to winning in order for them to have a chance to enter the playoffs.

Fittingly, they face the Dragons, a team who’s equally desperate win all its remaining games.
