With a 3-4 record heading into 2018, the Singapore Slingers have decided to make major changes in their line up by signing 7’0″ center Chris Charles as their World Import.
Charles will be replacing Canadian big man Ryan Wright who had been averaging 20.3 points and 13.4 rebounds in 39.0 minutes of action.
As a five season veteran in the league, Christien Charles will be adding yet another veteran presence to the Singapore Slingers who are looking to make another deep push in the playoffs. He’s a proven rim protector with a career average of 3.6 blocks per game who is also the league’s all-time leader (259) as well as the single season record holder in blocked shots (96). Those defensive efforts led Charles to being named the Defensive Player of the Year twice, in 2013 and in 2015-2016.
Charles can also get things going on the offensive end, putting up 18.6 points per game on a variety of nimble post moves, long reach putback slams, and soft touch hook shots.
Not only will the Singapore Slingers be adding a back-to-back World Import MVP (2014, 2015-2016), they will also be adding a proven ABL champion. In a season to remember, Charles led Hitech Bangkok City to the title in 2014. Throughout the past 5 seasons, the 36-year-old has played for the Sports Rev Thailand Slammers, Hitech Bangkok City, and the Saigon Heat.
Already one of the league’s best defensive teams, the Slingers allowed only 79.4 points per game (2nd best) and 46.6% from inside the arc (3rd best). By switching from Wright (who averaged only 0.9 blocks per game) to Charles, it should be even more difficult for opponents to get their way in the paint against the Slingers.
The Slingers will get a week of time to gel in 2018 before facing Tanduay Alab Pilipinas on Sunday, January 7th at OCBC Arena, Singapore.
